Examples of Phishing and Other Scams

A Message From David McMorries,

The Chief Information Security Officer

Welcome to Winter Term, Beavs!

Over the Winter Break, the Security team has been working on projects to help protect OSU from cyber actors. Keep an eye out for communications coming out soon talking about a change in experience with your Duo Multifactor. It is a small change in what you will see, but will make a big difference in helping us to protect the entire OSU Community!

This time of year is when fraudsters start changing tactics.  Watch for income tax scams, which are common this part of the year. The IRS has more information at this link:  https://www.irs.gov/help/tax-scams/recognize-tax-scams-and-fraud

Students, watch out for employment fraud phishes!  If someone who says they are an OSU faculty or staff is offering you easy money, and asks that you provide your personal e-mail or phone number, be super suspicious! If they are asking you for your banking information or want you to go buy something that they’ll pay you back for, you know this is a scam.

Be cyber-aware, Beavs! If you have any questions or want to check if something is too good to be true, contact us at D-FEND@oregonstate.edu.

Enjoy the Winter Term!

Respectfully,

David
