Frequently Asked Questions

What is Data Lab?

The vision of Data Lab 2.0 is to be a space where all data professionals are welcomed and empowered to grow their skills, knowledge, and confidence and to collaborate to serve the needs of OSU better. Data Lab 2.0 will work to bring together professional development opportunities for data analysts, data help and coaching, connection with data peers, and opportunities to impact the institutional data strategy and engage in shaping the future of the OSU data analyst community.

Why Data Lab "2.0"?

Before the pandemic, the UIT data team was conducting an in-person, drop-in data lab where people could bring their data issues. This space moved online and eventually went away due to a lack of available resources. Due to feedback received, we are bringing Data Lab back with a new spin to meet the ever-changing needs of the OSU analyst and data community.

Who is Data Lab for?

Data Lab 2.0 is meant to be a place for ANYONE who uses data in their job. The majority of our "bonus" offerings will be focused on sharing analytical skills, data knowledge, and project highlights. Everyone is welcome to attend these sessions and attendance is not required to take part in the data help sessions.

Bonus Offerings Details

In addition to the drop-in style Data Lab that we have offered in the past, we are trying something new with this fresh iteration. The first half hour (10:30 – 11:00) will contain a Community of Practice “bonus” session that will take the shape of one of the following formats:

  • Analyst Chalk Talks – OSU analysts share their work/work-in-progress and skills in a semi-formal presentation
  • Coffee Buzz on Data Street – Informal discussion where distributed analysts weigh in on what data priorities they are seeing, helping shape and guide priorities for the Central Data Team
  • Data Area Spotlight – Meet the data stewards and learn about different data domains at OSU
  • Data Team Project updates  - learn about progress and upcoming projects from the Central Data Team
  • Formal trainings – Trainings or webinars from central or outside resources based on requests and professional development needs identified by the community
  • Ethics in Data Dialogue - Discuss issues of ethics in data with other analysts
  • Analyst Data-ing – Meet a new analyst colleague and identify future opportunities to connect, help each other, or work together
  • Data Product Workshop - Bring a visualization, dashboard, or any other data product you have made for feedback and advice from your analyst community
